There is a two-stage authorisation process for mining in South Australia.
Anyone wishing to explore for minerals in South Australia must support their application for a mining lease with a 'mining lease proposal'.
If DMITRE approves the proposal and grants the lease, a program for environment protection and rehabilitation (PEPR) (formerly a mining and rehabilitation program (MARP)) must be approved under the Mining Act 1971 (external site) before mining may commence.
