Sections 6 and 15A of the Mining Act 1971 (the Act) establish the Mining Register as follows -
"(1) The Mining Registrar shall keep a register of -
[(a) deleted by amendments]
(b) registered claims; and
(c) leases and licences issued under this Act; and
(d) instruments registered under this Act.
(2) Subject to this Act, a person may, upon payment of the prescribed fee, inspect the register.
(3) The register may be kept in such forms as the Mining Registrar thinks fit."
Section 63ZBA of the Act requires that a distinct part of the Mining Register must be maintained for the registration of agreements and determinations under Part 9B - Native title land of the Act.
Some components of the Mining Register are considered confidential and are not available for inspection. Departmental files are not part of the Mining Register, and the files and their contents are not public information.

Most search results can be provided electronically (pdf documents by email) or in hard-copy for collection at Level 7, 101 Grenfell St or delivery by normal mail or by fax.

Any search queries will incur a fee. Refer to the Mining Act Fees page for the current fees.
Once a search query is received and completed, a Mineral Tenements team member will contact you to confirm your details and arrange payment. If you require confirmation of the approximate cost of your search before it is done, please advise in your written request. An exact cost may not be known until the search is complete.
Payment can be made over the phone by credit card (Visa/MasterCard), by mail with cheque/money order, or in-person by credit card, cheque, money order or cash. Search fees cannot be paid by bank transfer.
Payment must be received before the search results can be released. A tax receipt will be provided at the completion of the transaction, however a tax invoice cannot be generated prior to payment.
