Resources - Working for the Right Balance

A multimedia educational kit designed for students from 8 to 15 years of age. The kit was developed by Primary Industries and Resources SA with additional input from a team of educators and industry representatives.

Topics covered include:

  • Importance of minerals
  • Environmental management in the resources industry
  • Using resources from the earth
  • Groundwater
  • Employment and careers
  • Energy
  • Finding the right balance

The eight topics, are treated in each medium but have a different approach in each, so as to bring out new facets of learning processes each time.

Multimedia components of the kit include:

  • a highly interactive CDrom that can be used as an electronic blackboard for teacher-directed instruction or for student-centred individual progression style learning
  • an eight topic video that can be used to introduce each topic by bringing the outside world into the classroom or as summary at the end of studying a topic
  • a Teacher's Guide with overhead projector (OHP) masters and teacher background reading information and Student Worksheets Book with student worksheets for photocopying, experiments and role play games.

Minimum hardware requirements:

  • PC 486 16bit colour 8Mb free RAM
  • Mac OS7, 16 bit colour and 5 Mb free RAM

Cost:
The first copy of this kit is free to South Australian schools. Additional copies and copies for other schools and organisations can be purchased for $90.00 from PIRSA Customer Services.

Mineral Identification and Uses Laboratory Kit

This kit is designed to help students in years 4 to 10 learn more about their planet by being able to identify minerals and their uses.

The Laboratory Kit contains:

  • 12 mineral specimens
  • mineral testing gear.

The revised second edition of the Mineral Identification and Uses Lab Book includes:

  • information on how to identify mineral samples and mineral identification chart
  • information on mineral uses and products
  • a South Australian Mineral Resources Map
  • mineral identification sheet that can be copied for student use within the classroom.

Cost:
The first copy of this kit is free to South Australian schools. Additional copies and copies for other schools and organisations can be purchased for $55.00 from PIRSA Customer Services.
